Android is extremely laggy on the Galaxy Nexus for any release after 4.4

Description
I don't know if this can be improved upon as this device is very old at this point. But the performance of any Android after 4.4 is unbearably slow.
Is there anything that can be done by the Unegacy team to improve this?
